It can be said bluntly that 2015 was a nightmare for VW. The company got itself embroiled in what has turned into an international scandal which will cost it untold millions (billions?) of dollars and has but a severe hurting on the otherwise good image of diesel powered cars and trucks. In an effort to keep their chin up, a stiff upper lip, and the train rolling down the tracks they continue to promote their new models and features. One of those features is a trailer assist function and they way they have promoted it turns out to be one of the best automotive prank videos we have ever seen or heard about. The trailer drives the car…literally.
Using a shop located somewhere in Europe fabricators chopped a small front wheel drive car in half. After that they built a trailer frame around the outside and painted it so that one could see out but no one could see in. They then installed a driver in the trailer mobile, hooked it to a VW wagon and then had a stunt driver in that car as well. You know what happened next. They went bombing around cities and towns, through parking garages, traffic circles, and parking lots. People are incredulous when they see this operation go whizzing by. There’s a look of shock followed by a look of nervous excitement. The old, “What the hell was that?!” situation happens over and over again in this short video and it is brilliant.
We have to give huge credit to the driver in the VW wagon who was having to steer opposite the guy in the front. Attached by radio communication they would apparently talk each other through the turns and situations that they encountered. That does not mean a dearth of close calls. There’s one and we’re not sure if it was a setup or not, when the tandem is driving (“trailer first”) down a circular parking structure ramp and a guy in a scooter has a bit of a close shave. Pay attention and don’t miss it!
Whoever schemed this up deserves a raise. The guys who pulled it off deserve kudos, dough, and your admiration. This is awesome!
