You read that right, kids COMP Cams is once again leading the valvetrain development front in the aftermarket with their debut of a line of conical valve springs and the release of performance camshafts for GM’s newest V8 engine family, the LT. The valve springs are the latest evolution in valve control technology. We went from standard straight springs with single or dual coils, then to beehive shaped springs with their rounded shape, and now we’ve moved into the era of conical shaped springs that allow for a reduction in valvetrain mass because of smaller retainer size and less mass for the spring itself because the conical shape tapers at the top and the result is less material used in construction. COMP told us that these springs are great in a wide range of applications from mild street/strip engines all the way up to more serious, race only mills. We spoke to Jay Adams in the video below and he elaborates on the spring applications and why these babies are the newest and bestest technology available or your valves spring needs.
Along with the springs, COMP has also rolled out performance cams for the new GM LT series V8 engines! A first on the market, COMP worked on their grinds for more than a year before turning them loose on the buying public here at SEMA. By taking advantage of the variable valve timing functionality that the LT engines have, the COMP guys were able to alter the window that the cams advance and retard to produce more low end torque and more top end power. Having just gotten out of the seat of an LT powered truck last week, I can tell you that the engine is healthy stock and will be a ball of fun with a new cam. We wish we could have stabbed one of these guys into the truck we had! Tire shredding would have been the order of the day.
