SEMA 2013 Video: American Powertrain Rolls Out An Awesome And Innovative Twin Disc Clutch, A Full Hydraulic Solution For Fox Mustangs, And Bulletproof (literally) Mounts!

It all makes sense now. For the last year, every time we have tried to call up and harass our pals Gray and Matt at American Powertrain, they’d just yell, “WE’RE BUSY!” and slam the phone down. We’re used to rejection but this was puzzling, we thought these guys actually liked us. As it turns out, the whole American Powertrain crew has been hard at it in the skunkworks developing several new products that are both functional and innovative, solving problems and making life better for BangShifters like us. At the 2013 SEMA show they dropped the curtain on this stuff and we were there to get video and info on it all.

For starters there is the company’s new line of “ISO X” mounts. American Powertrain is producing transmission, engine, and even body mounts out of this unique material that was originally developed for the Department of Defense and is currently used to up armor vehicles like the HUMVEE for battle. Extremely light weight, incredibly strong, resistant and impervious to any sort of corruption from fluids, it absorbs shock and acts like nothing else on the market. The material will not compress or degrade…ever. We think that its use for body mounts is super brilliant because typical mounts tend to compress and get nasty over time and exposure to the elements. This material won’t do that and it is superior to typical rubber mounts in virtually every way.

Next up is American Powertrain’s fully hydraulic clutch and throw out bearing solution for Fox Mustangs. Most current setups still use a cable somewhere in their unit but not this one. Fully hydraulic, it gets rid of the junk cable, cures problems with firewall flex, and essentially eliminates every downside of both the factory and currently available aftermarket pieces. The installation is a breeze, using a unique mounting system on the firewall and the results are that the end user has far more reliable and controllable clutch actuation. That’s a win/win.

Finally, the big news is American Powertrain’s “Atomic Twin” clutch. Unlike any other twin disc clutch on the market, the Atomic Twin uses a dual pressure plate system to progressively engage both discs. This takes care of the often abrupt and violent engagement of twin disc clutches that use a single plate and engage both discs at the same time. For low speed operation in traffic, parking, etc, this is a huge development. Anyone that has ever driven any of the existing twin disc setups can tell you that things can be dicey and annoying during those driving conditions. The clutch is rated to handle 950 lb/ft in a 3500lb car, which means that it’ll take even more than that if you ride less porky!

Rather than blather on, we’re going to let Chad and Gray from American Powertrain give you the details in the video below! These guys have been working hard and the results are great products and will make your hot rod mo’ betta!

“Anyone that has ever driven any of the existing twin disc setups can tell you that things can be dicey and annoying during those driving conditions”

I drive a McLeod twin disc in my 68 Mustang and have ZERO problems with the above, just sounds like marketing BS to me.

I have had nothing but problems with American powetrain I bought there hydro throw out set up for a GM t56 magnum and they neglected to tell me that you need a spacer because of clutch Pak set up height and that i had to pay 100+ dollars for a spacer and there hardware if you need it to make it fit they should include it then they said that because I didn’t buy my t56 magnum from them that’s why it didn’t fit yea because t56 magnums are different if you don’t pay the 500 dollars more for there transmission that’s exactly the same

I have dealt with American Powertrain a ton, been running a atomic twin for 4 years, no problems. It’s the only clutch I have used that survived the street and strip in my 4000lb 10 sec 1965 GTO!
