One of the most infamous car and engine combinations in the history of drag racing was the deadly match of a Chrysler Hemi and the tiny Dodge Colt in the early 1970s. Prompted by the ass kicking laid on the world in 1972 by Grumpy Jenkins, a 426ci Hemi Colt would have been the ultimate answer counter punch. Unfortunately, the little cars were unpredictable and sent many racers to the hospital, and at least one, Don Carlton to his grave.
With those chilling words out of the way, we can look at this street legal version of those racing hellions. There’s a Hemi in there, but it is a 392ci old school motor, not the 426ci version that was found in the nose of the Pro Stock versions. The engine appears to be leaping out of the car, and if you have ever seen one of these little weenie-mobiles in person, you too would share in our amazement that the damned thing even fit between the fenders!
The interior is clean, but minimalistic. Judging by the custom dash panel and the fact that a couple of the pedals come up through the floor, we believe that the firewall has been reworked. Also note the humongous hump for the trans tunnel, which is obviously far different in size and stature than it would have been as a stocker. The floors are also not stock as the seller lists the car as having “sheet metal” floors.
With no cage and some smallish tires on the rear, this car must be a handful at full song. We’d love the chance to wrassle with it, though!
The $45,000 asking price is certainly steep, but then again, we’ve NEVER seen this type setup in anything but one of the old racing Colts. How much is a one off Hemi Colt worth?
