This is a very violent wreck that illustrates some of the dangers that lurk at tracks which are not constructed to modern safety standards. When this pair of four second, eighth-mile door slammers careened down the strip, everything looked ok. The major trouble in this video starts when the cars enter the shut down area.
The Lumina in the right lane gets into the wall and then heads clear across the track and collects up the Camaro which is minding it’s own business in the left lane. Unfortunately for the driver in the Camaro, this track’s guardrails stopped shortly after the finish line and instead of bashing off the wall and staying on the racing surface, the car slides onto the grass and begins a series of violent flips and rolls.
The driver made it through this incident, but had to be helicopter air flighted out of the track and to the hospital. According to the caption on the video the driver in the Camaro never again drove a race car. It still would have been a nasty wreck if the walls went thought the shutdown area, but it was exponentially worse because they didn’t.
