(Photos by High Octane Images) – With a flag starter and a 330′ length course run on the landing strip at the small Sterling Airport in Sterling, Massachusetts the Orange Drag Strip Reunion channeled the days of old and gave participants and spectators a great taste of what the sport was like before huge tracks, huge money, and all the other trappings of growth has brought it. The racing once done at Orange Airport in Orange, Massachusetts is celebrated at this event and lots of people and even some of the cars that used to sprint down that runway were at Sterling as well. The celebration of old time drag racing reaches generations far too young to have seen the sport when it was coming up and this event is further proof of that. Many of the cars on display in the show area were built or owned by people who had fathers and grandfathers racing at Orange.
According to our own Christian Rowell who shot these photos, it was a great time for everyone. Judging by the turnout and the amount of people who have followed this event as it has moved once or twice over the years, people will be celebrating the history of drag racing in Massachusetts and specifically the history of the long gone Orange Drag Strip for a long time to come.
Over the years the equipment showing up to run the 330′ has gotten more and more serious. While this is a “run for fun” style event, slingshot dragsters, hardcore street machines, as well as vintage cars are all on tap and giving it hell down the 330′ course. You’ll see all kinds of stuff at the link below. This is the type of stuff that we love to see because it is yet another piece of proof of how the sport of drag racing is thriving again in all of its myriad of forms.

there were 6 front engine dragsters there for the ‘tin can’ trophy in the nostalgia class. we came in 2nd with ours. hard to beat the 8sec alky rail.
but it is a great time.
