Being a tow truck driver these days is tough and dangerous work. From the long hours on the road to the risk of some idiot plowing into you on the highway, there’s a lot of risks associated with the work. That being said, today’s wrecker operators live life like Buck Rogers in the future as compared to the brave souls that ran trucks like the one we found for sale on eBay. This 1933 Chevy wrecker represented a heavy duty truck and some of the best equipment of its day.
Think about this for a second. While a Model T weighed about 1,200lbs this truck was also needed to pull stuff like Packards and Cadillacs around and those cars were two ton terrors. Can you imagine how much effort it had to have taken on the hand cranked boom to get the nose of one of those big guys off the ground? How about the ability to stop all that weight on the small manual brakes of the day? Shoot, just dragging it up a hill with the 180ci six cylinder engine would have been a seemingly everlasting tour.
We really enjoy the fact that this truck has been accurately restored and not hot rodded. We certainly have nothing against hot rods here but something like this is really a look into history and it should give some appreciation for the evolution of how wreckers have come along from their humble beginnings.
We want this one bad!
