It has not been too long since Jere Stahl passed away. Stahl left us over the summer and after his passing some of his stuff is being sold as things tend to be. Jere Stahl was an opinionated, sometimes gruff guy but he was a great drag racer and someone who built headers used by the likes of Penske and Donohue, Grumpy Jenkins, and plenty of others. He was the man.
Stahl headers were bad ass from the first day he began manufacturing and they were awesome right up until he day he decided he was ready to retire. Stahl was pioneering in the header world and approached the idea of exhaust headers with an engineered and scientific method that very few (if any) aftermarket builders were using at the time. Did we mention he was also an awesome drag racer who had a long and fruitful career as well?
After racing a series of Chevrolets, Stahl attacked the world in 1966 with a 1966 four-speed, hemi powered Plymouth. He and Grumpy Jenkins squared off with Grumpu driving his small block powered Chevy II. Stahl’s 1966 season is one for the history books. There were four NHRA national events in 1966 and Jere Stahl managed to win stock at Bristol and the top stock at Indy along with top stock at the finals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. That’s pretty amazing stuff.
Oh, the wheels. So what’s come up for sale on eBay are the killer Hurst wheels that Stahl used on his open trailer that hauled his hemi powered Plymouth (and a bunch of other stuff we’re sure) over the years. Hurst wheels were pretty amazing for the time because they were the first to use forged aluminum centers. They also weighed a ton and were delivered a steel drum that looked kind of like a miniature oil barrel.
While these are not in perfect shape, they can certainly be rehabbed and used on whatever you want. The bolt pattern is the common 4 1/2 inch bolt – 5 lug pattern so these things will fit a ton of different stuff.
Pretty neat, right?
one thing about the flea-bay seller, he is always real proud of his items or overpriced. take your pick about calling it.
I’ve got two Motor Wheel Spyders 1960 dated I’ll sell for a whole lot less than what those are going for…….
