Back in March we told you about and showed you a trailer for a documentary being made about Ohio resident Mike Charlton and his home-brewed quest to set the LSR record for motorcycles with his crazy turbine powered machine. The film chronicles his story and that of his band of brothers who are helping him achieve it. The guy is no saint. He’e been to jail damned near 20 times. His brothers are a cast of characters right out of central casting. It is an underdog story of truly massive proportions. In short, it is one hell of a story!
Here’s the trailer we showed you before
The film makers who have spent the last couple of years chasing Mike and filming hundreds of hours of footage are now asking for some help in getting their project finished. They want to tie the story up with Charlton’s attempt at the record once again this year at Bonneville. They are looking to raise the money needed to pay for a full crew to shoot the car at this event as they have envisioned. Your donation does get you stuff, ranging from a DVD to pieces of the actual machine that will be used at Bonneville. The film makers are trying to raise $15,000 bucks to get themselves and a full crew to the salt.
There are indications that this will be Mike’s last trip to the salt. As you’ll see in the new trailer below, Mike’s health is failing. He’s lost 40lbs, his teeth, and generally does not seem well. Add in the brothers, the memory of a dead father that was dreaming about what they’re doing not, and you have an amazingly compelling film.
One note on the trailer. The dude talking mentions that most LSR teams have corportate backers, so it was rare that this car was doing so well. LSR racing is, of course, one of the last bastions of racing that has not been pervaded by the sponsor monster. Corporate backing is not as widespread as the video guy would have you believe.
Onto the film!
