In an event that history will record as being the first of its kind, the NMCA hosted a Cobra Jet shootout at the race at Milan Dragway recently. The modern Cobra Jets are the craziest factory drag race cars of all time, by a lot. Yes, the Hurst Hemi cars are significant, but a well tuned Super Cobra Jet will walk it like a Yugo. Joe Grippo dispatched his brother Dan to shoot this event and he did a bang up (BangShift!) job.
We’re not sure what’s in the Kool Aid at the Grippo house, but it seems that these two brothers are Ford obsessed!
Everyone who is anyone in the Cobra Jet world was at this race. Carl Tasca, the Varsity Ford guys, Gary Richard, Evan Smith, and on and on. There were multiple classes run, so cars that had the small blower were not lined up against the big blower machines and of course, the full slate of NMCA racing was also going on.
This gallery is heavy on Ford porn, but Dan did a nice job of hitting up all the different classes at this event!
Thanks to Dan Grippo for shooting these photos!

Gad Zooks!!!!!!!
Some sweet iron in that gallery!!
And my dad drove a ’65 Volkswagen. 40 horse. No wonder I turned out to be a pussy.
And I had to work! Would have loved to meet you Dan! Great shots – I know the driver of one of the varsity cars – the black CJ “clone” – he was dissapointed when it only ran an 8.04 first time out! Over 600 cubes… ooga booga!
I’d like to hear the whole story as to why Charlie Westcott hadworld’s baddest Hemi Super Stock on the planet at the event. He would have had to de-tune it a bunch to run in NMCA Nostalgia Super Stock as his car runs considerably faster than the A/NSS index of 10.00.
Anybody have any ideas?
Ron
Ford asked Charlie to bring the Warfish over to match race the quickest CJ. Tasca was #1 but broke a pulley against Charlie late Friday night. Later Friday night Wescott matched up against Randy Hopkins who went an 8.teen something lifting to the Fishes 8.40 something.
