Drag Week Question Answered: How did Scott Smith’s Malibu Get Dented?

Scott Smith’s 1980 Malibu is currently dominating the Big Block Power Adder class at Drag Week 2011. We’ve gotten a bunch of questions as to how the dent in the front fender got there. Because we are sick of getting run over with e-mail questions on the subject, here’s the answer.

Smith had made an 8-second run at Topeka and was minding his own bee’s wax on the return road, perhaps packing his ‘chute. About that time, Todd Maschmeier’s Camaro, driven by Travis “Doorkiller” Gilpin, which is currently leading the Modified Power Adder class made a pass. When he came around the corner to cruise up the return road, a big gust of wind grabbed his parachute and threw it to the side, catching the open door of Smith’s Malibu! The door got pulled open way over center, causing the door edge to cave that front fender in some.

True to Drag Week form, Smith got the door working and hit the road. We hope he can pull off the win, and he leaves the dent. What a story!
