The Grand Tour’s Richard Hammond Escaped This Monster Crash With A Fractured Knee

The Grand Tour’s Richard Hammond Escaped This Monster Crash With A Fractured Knee

The Grand Tour presenter Richard Hammond must be part cat, because he’s using up spare lives rather quickly. The former Top Gear presenter, who in 2006 very nearly bought the farm after a jet dragster he was piloting suffered a blowout at over 280 miles an hour, was competing in the Hemburg Hill Climb in Switzerland in a Rimac Concept 1, one of eight ever made. The 1,224 horsepower electric supercar got loose and crashed extremely hard. It’s difficult to see exactly what happened in the footage, but the end result was the Rimac upside-down and on fire, with Hammond, who had self-extracated, nearby with a fractured knee, conscious and alert.

The Grand Tour’s Twitter page issued a statement: “Richard Hammond was involved in a seriousl crash after completing the Hemburg Hill Climb in Switzerland in a Rimac Concept One, an electric supercar built in Croatia, during filming for The Grand Tour Season 2 on Amazon Prime, but very fortunately suffered no serious injury. Richard was conscious and talking, and climbed out of the car himself before the vehicle burst into flames. He was flown by Air Ambulance to hospital in St. Gallen to be checked over revealing a fracture to his knee. Nobody else was in the car or involved in the accident, and we’d like to thank the paramedics on site for their swift response. The cause of the crash is unknown and is being investigated.”

Jeremy Clarkson added via Twitter: “It was the biggest crash I’ve ever seen and the most frightening but incredibly and thankfully, Richard seems to be mostly OK.”

Richard…still “writing and cashing”…this was too close. Being burned and zapped to death, what’s next, having a piano fall on you? 🙂

From Wikipedia: “Each wheel is powered by a separate liquid-cooled permanent magnet synchronous electric motor and controlled by the so-called “All Wheel Torque Vectoring System” that distributes the power to the wheels in accordance with user setup and driving conditions.”

    Hmm…apparently not…

Was there any safety shit in the car or on him?

I saw a short bit on Reddit yesterday that Hammond recorded from his hospital bed. He seemed in good spirits but said something about his wife not being to happy.

Judging by the vid looks like he went high into the corner and got into the marbles. Thanks to someone for looking after him, again……….

He entered the turn too hot. Can see four wheels locked up as he goes off the road. Speed kills, play it safe, drive a Ford.
