Anti-SUV: This 1994 Buick Roadmaster Estate Is Somewhere Between Practical Daily And Classic

Anti-SUV: This 1994 Buick Roadmaster Estate Is Somewhere Between Practical Daily And Classic

The days of the long station wagon have been over for decades now, with the GM B-bodies the last true holdouts, dying off in 1996 in favor of more full-size sport utility vehicles. That’s just the way it was going…Ford pulled the plug on the Country Squire in 1991, AMC dumped the Matador wagon in 1978 and Chrysler ditched their full-size wagons in 1977 in the early wave of downsizing. The Chevrolet Caprice, Buick Roadmaster and Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser were the last of the great highway wagons that seated eight, used a V8 for motivation and were tuned for comfort over any kind of handling performance goal or any of that nonsense. The large station wagon isn’t coming back…sport utilities stole the hearts of the average American family and we don’t see any change to that anytime soon. Even if they did make a return, they would have to ride a bit higher and appeal to some kind of “outdoor” or “offroad” theme to make buyers happy, it seems.

But ask anybody who has spent any kind of time in one of these last B-bodies what their take from it is and at some point, “comfortable” will pop up into the conversation. These were truly couches on wheels, durable as all hell (ask any cop that used a 9C1 Caprice on patrol) and while they wouldn’t shock and awe with performance, they wouldn’t let you down either. Look at this 1994 Roadmaster Estate and you’ll see what I’m talking about…this car is twenty-four years old, has lived in Northern climates and Ohio, and only sports a minor bit of quarter rust and a spot or two on the tailgate to prove it. The interior is gorgeous. The LT-1 is still present and accounted for. The desirable towing package is one of the options on the list, and there are some tasteful mods done, including suspension work, computer tweaking and exhaust, all of which can be reversed because the owner has kept the parts.

When this car was sitting on the dealership lot, a 1969 Chevelle was the twenty-four year old car that might have been worth restoring. This Buick certainly qualifies for a mild refresh and some new Gray-Green paint.

These cars look so much better w/o the wood paneling. But with the mods done to this one, I’ll overlook it!

I currently have a 94 4 door Roadmaster and want a wagon so bad. 70 or 100 mph feels the same, smooth and comfortable. Need to take the speed limiter off.

Several years ago right before the races were moved from Columbus to Norwalk, I was pulling out of the parking area with my son and late friend in a maroon Pontiac Parisiene with the woodgrain trim and this guy who was pretty well hammered looks over and shouts \”f***** A, station wagons rule\”. My son & I still laugh about that to this day. Of course I would have to agree with him.

I wish I would have never sold my long roof. The most perfect car ever built. Plenty of power to tow, legs on the freeway, Cadillac level ride, room to fit a full sheet of plywood, good gas millage. Simply no better all around vehicle.
