4/27: Paying Tribute To Ford’s FE Stomper In All It’s Forms!

Four twenty-seven. Cobra Jets, Super Cobra Jets, and Boss small blocks may run with it, but there is no doubt that Ford’s seven-liter race motor was a violent beast in it’s own right. Based on the same FE architecture that brought out such engines as the 428 CJ/SCJ, 406, and 390, the 427 originally was a concentrated race-only engine built in two configurations: “top-oiler” and “side-oiler”, and it’s the side-oiler setup that was the basis for one of Chrysler’s biggest nightmares: the 427 SOHC “Cammer” motor. This is still the only engine that NASCAR ever banned outright. But it’s not like the regular 427 Fords weren’t just as evil…Enzo Ferrari probably heard the bellowing howl of GT40s in his nightmares for years after Henry Ford II went on the ultimate revenge campaign, whipping Ferrari’s ass at LeMans four times running. Carroll Shelby probably used the noise of his SuperSnake Cobra to lull himself to sleep. From Thunderbolts to Galaxies, the 427 Ford earned it’s keep and to this day, the sound of a Cammer idling is enough to make anybody who knows engines take pause. Stick around, because the show will always be good.
