I understand how passion and emotions can get the better of a racer when ego and reputation are on the line. That’s when you see all the stops come out and we get videos showing cars going every which way but straight, leaving stripes down the strip that look like the “slippery when wet” roadway signs with shift breaks. But there has to be a moment where you give up a run and back down for safety’s sake, and this pass from South Carolina Motorplex shows exactly why. The blue Fox Mustang in the left lane is on kill and from the second the lights flash, you know it…the Ford’s nose comes up in the air and stays up in the air as the Mustang passes the threshold that separates “wheelie” from “flight”. All four tires come off of the ground as the Fox tries to become a wing for a moment, before slamming back down to the tarmac…and nose-first into the wall.
Winning isn’t everything. Even if, by some miracle, the Mustang had won the race, the battle would be lost. There’s no way the car would be good enough to continue on racing and no amount of thrashing would patch it up good enough in time even if it would be allowed to return to the track at the same event. Chances are good that this Mustang is D-E-A-D done, with the racer looking for the next car to build.
