If you are going to tow, you may as well tow in style, right? This is one way to do it and boy are we loving the whole program here. You are looking at a 2007 GMC C5500 Kodiak Monroe Conversion rig that has four wheel drive, Duramax power, and a luxurious interior that’ll keep you and your companions comfy for thousands and thousands of over the road miles. The only thing we think that this truck needs is some larger rolling stock. It is an awkward look the thing is sporting now with the very short tires that are on it. The tire deal would be remedied pretty easily with a quick stop at your local truck tire dealer. That’s an easy one. Yes we’d give up some mechanical advantage with the small tires but we could also warm up what appears to be a stock Duramax to make up for the taller tires.
You don’t see a bunch of these trucks around. We know that Monroe has bee building them for ages but they are not hugely popular all around the country. This being said, there are probably hundreds of them prowling the roads but our point is that Monroe is not cranking out 1,000 a week. I drove a Ford F-650 Custom Cruzer for 24 hours straight years ago on a banzai mission to save a racing event when I was in college. While that truck was a lower riding, non-four wheel drive equipped beast, it was basically the Ford equivalent to this thing and I was in love.
Monroe’s conversions have been well known and talked about for a long, long time. This is not some backyard hack job deal and it does not look like it, either. It would require a Sawzall and some carpentry skills but I’m thinking that raising the garage door height may be worth it if this big guy is in your future.

An interesting article or discussion would be if these trucks will remain smog legal in CA. My Grading Contractor has received notices from the CA DMV that his 1986 6.9 f350 and his 2004 International service true will only be able to be registered two more years under the TIER act in CA. Apparently it applies to trucks over 14000 gvw, which the f350 does not have but the International does.
