We all know that Brian’s one true passion is drag racing. He’s been doing it for years and he’s proven to be absolutely amazing at his craft. Hearing him on the mic is today’s translation of hearing Dave Mac in his prime, and that’s not to inflate his already large head, he’s that good. Whether it’s a small hometown deal or a NHRA big show, Lohnes can run the microphone like nobody’s business. But you know what I’d love to see most of all? I would pay money to haul my ass up to Seekonk to listen to Lohnes announce the spectator drags. Just one time, I want to see him bring his dinner up to the tower in a sack, get comfortable, and proceed to roll on about two drivers who are pretending to be NASCAR royalty for a night on a small track an hour’s drive away from his doorstep.
The action is good and the car selection is surprisingly good. The usual late-model Mustangs, ex-cop Crown Vics and older F-bodies show up, but among them are even earlier Camaros and Firebirds, a Mitsubishi 3000GT driven like the cops are after it, and even a Vega and Fiero give it a shot. There’s tight racing. There’s too-close racing as a Camaro’s rear bumper gets a tweak. Honestly, it’s pretty awesome and certainly better than watching spectator drags where the drivers seem hell-bent on creaming the other guy’s ride before Turn One.
