Rough Start: 1977 Dodge D100 – That Classic Bug Deflector Makes It!

Rough Start: 1977 Dodge D100 – That Classic Bug Deflector Makes It!

How many of you remember when trucks looked just about exactly like this? The off-color camper shell with the big side glass. The handle behind the door. The single step. The stock wheels and tires on meaty tires that weren’t off-road specific. The bug deflector, man…when was the last time you saw one of those that wasn’t cracked, chipped or otherwise destroyed? Ford, GM, Dodge, hell I remember seeing Nissan Hardbody trucks that looked like this back in the day! Grandpa’s truck…used but not used to death, broke in but not broken, cared for like a member of the family.

If you’ve been here at BangShift for more than a minute you know that I have a weakness for 1970s trucks that haven’t been messed with too much. This Dodge just puts me over the moon, and not just for the Mopar kick (though it does help). Look at it…mostly original paint, a 318 that is about as pleasant looking as they come…seriously, minimal grime, plenty of blue paint visible… and the fully upscale interior complete with the gauge package, the really shiny fake wood trim, and that wound-wrapped steering wheel cover. Yes, it’s the color of hot honey mustard sauce you’d slather over chicken strips and lies somewhere between Bright Yellow and the old High Impact color EL5 Butterscotch, but who cares. It’s a 1977 Dodge truck that looks this good, with parts, for under five grand.

Why are you still reading? Take that last thousand bucks out of your $5,000 Rough Start budget and go buy a plane ticket to SeaTac right now!

Decent piece. I’d like to have another one of those.

Going by the front parking lights it’s a 1978. All the 77’s used clear lenses with yellow light bulbs. Some early 78’s also had this setup until the vendor ran out of them. Then the rest of the 1978 model year trucks used yellow lenses with clear light bulbs like the ones on this truck.

Bryan Mopar 87 D150 that i purchased off of the original owner for $4200 and a set of tires thrown in the deal. 77k and get this , it appears he never did a tune up as the original drive belts , wires, Plugs, fuel filter were still on the truck. I guess the adage if it ain\’t broke don\’t fix it. Did a Transmission Filter/Fluid change as well. He did change the oil though. It runs Fantastic and looks Beautiful in White / Black trim. Found it on Facebook Marketplace In Charlotte NC.
