(By Tom Lohnes) – The current 2020 Genesis G80 is already a jack of all trades. Making up to 420 horsepower, being affordable enough, and having features cars twice its price doesn’t even have the G80 is great. Genesis just recently revealed a new generation of G80, and it looks solid. But is it worth a $5,000 premium over its predecessor?
Alright, well let’s start off with base prices and what they offer. Starting at $44,300, the 2020 G80 offers rear-wheel-drive, a 3.8-liter Naturally Aspirated V6, and rather generic styling. The new one, which packs a 2.5-liter Turbo I-4, starts at $47,900, and has 300 horsepower, sheds about 500 pounds, and has a more refined transmission. Moving up a trim, the 2020 G80 3.3 Sport has 365 horsepower, a sportier design, meaty tires, and a 4.9-second 0-60 time. The G80 sport starts at $55,500. The sport trim on the 2021 doesn’t exist yet, but for the new 3.5-liter, 400 horsepower V6, it costs $62,750. For a top-of-the-line trim with all the options, the 2020 G80 5.0 ultimate has a big V8, 420 horsepower, and will cost you $59,015, and the 2021 will run you $69,075
The only thing the 2020 has going for it is the V8 engine. The 2021 just has so much more for not that bad of a price premium for a luxury vehicle. Take BMW for instance, the upgrade from the 6-cylinder 540i to the V8 M550i is a whole $15,000.
And that makes the G80 look like a deal.
Could the grille possibly be any larger? Maybe they should go with hideaway headlights like a ’68-’70 Charger to make this an even more absurd exercise in overgrill.
The car looks nice enough if you don’t look at the front. Geez that’s worse than the Lexus.
Ugly is an understatement.
