(By Tom Lohnes) – Nowadays, people drive giant cars. And by giant, I mean gargantuan. The average full-size long wheelbase Chevy Suburban, just entered it’s 13th generation, and weighs 6,016 pounds topped out. Do you need that? Absolutely not. Is Chevy making a bigger one? Probably.
The Suburban is on the chassis of the Chevy Silverado 1500 with a crew cab and a long bed. Pretty big right? Well, Ford is reviving the Excursion on the Super Duty platform, AKA the heavy-duty trucks. See where I’m going?
Yes, there will most likely be a Suburban HD that tips the scales at over 8,000 pounds at a Chevy dealer near you in the foreseeable future. The pro of making a bigger Suburban is towing and doing more truck stuff with your SUV. If equipped with the Duramax V8, the single rear wheel Silverado 2500 can tow 21,575 pounds, or 3 Suburban HD’s if you want to count it that way. Towing that much would be a big appeal to people with 8 to 10 people in their family that need to tow something. The con of a 4-ton land barge such as the Suburban HD is maneuverability. I can’t see the big ‘burban selling well in people-heavy areas because even the 1500-based one has the turning radius of a yacht. Inside should remain the same in Chevy Truck Fashion, and 4WD should be available.
The Suburban is already an expensive car as it stands. Topping out at over $80,000, the normal one isn’t cheap. The bigger one will share that factor. Expect to be paying at very least $60,000 for this monster of a vehicle.
Those will be in line to pick the kids up from elementary school soon. You know, to haul those 2 kids, and the dog, and your purse.
If a certain person gets in the White House and bans fracking, fuel will be at $6.00 a gallon, and these will just be collecting dust on a new car lot. Just saying.
Whatever happened to the “no politics” rule on BangShift?
The cost of gas wont be an issue, with GMs quality of late it will be at the dealer most of the time anyway.
NO POLITICS. NO FURTHER WARNINGS.
The only reason suburban he and excursion are considered is the economy currently allows for it. It is all about to change. Dramatically. You ll be drivig bubble cars with AA batteries at best. Most likely light rail tram or bus( electric of course)
Now they can build a two door version and sell a Blazer that we really wanted instead of the crossover that is being made now.
Hmmm…manufacturers vying to build the biggest ICE vehicles while simultaneously telling us EV’s are the wave of the future.
When Ford renewed the rights to the Excursion name within the paper work was EV, my guess is we won’t have to worry about these gargantuan SUVs needing gas at all, the Hummer is a large EV so it can be done. I do hope they at least offer diesel. I own a V10 Excursion love it, just looking forward to seeing a new version.
They can make it as big as they want, but it’s still ugly as sin. Honestly if Ram built a Cummins 2500 Excursion fighter it would wipe the floor with Ford and Chevy.
Never understood why someone would buy a truck named RAM that has goat heads on the hood, seats, dash, and steering wheel.
