Welding aluminum can be done with a gas welding torch setup, a TIG welder, or a MIG welder. Usually, the latter involves a Spool Gun which houses a small spool of aluminum welding wire that is right at the gun where you hold it, rather than inside the welding machine itself. This is most commonly done because the soft aluminum wire has a hard time being pushed through the entire length of the torch lead. With better technology and expertise things are changing in the way of MIG welding aluminum.
In this video Waldo is building a new aluminum flat bed for his project truck, using a new HTP aluminum mig welder that uses a standard spool inside the machine and does a really nice job of welding. It isn’t as fancy looking as TIG welds would be, but for a project like this it certainly does the job and is easier for someone without TIG welding skills.
