(Photos by Darr Hawthorne) The Kowabunga Van Klan is all about the vintage Volkswagen Type 2 and being based in Surf City USA; Huntington Beach, California you know it’s rooted deeply in the surfing culture. The Classic VW Type 2 bus was the cool mode of transportation for surfers in the 1960’s and ‘70s providing a base to keep the beer cold and often a home to spend the day or weekend riding the waves of Southern California.
Huntington Beach hosts a bunch of surfing championships during the year with hundreds of competitors and just about any morning you’ll find riders patiently waiting for that perfect wave.
The Huntington Beach pier is the gathering place for surfing, beach volleyball, strolling and bike riding, this annual event is well attended and has a prominent place on the pier and adjacent parking lots attracting about 65 surf wagons. The event draws young and old and presented by the International Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach.
These classic vans, and one woody, are an awesome reflection of the owners and families who restore and drive them, this event fell on St. Patricks day and the pier was packed.
