Chevelle is one of the most vaunted names in muscle car history and like all muscle cars they came in many varieties and flavors. From plain Jane 300 models all the way up to the mights 1970 SS with LS6 454 power, the Chevelle was a car that was designed to fit just about every budget and taste. The Chevelle “platform” to use a modern term for chassis lived on for a long time. 1980s B and G bodies were underpinned by frames that were near exact copies of the 1964-1972 Chevelle. Hell, the Flowmaster exhaust system we installed on Project Buford T Justice WAS intended for a 19640-1972 Chevelle and it bolted up with zero modification.
Along with the Chevelle there was the El Camino which had the handsome looks of the ‘Velle up front and the utility of a small pickup truck out back. El Caminos could also be optioned up with big motors and zooty performance parts. While the lack of weight over the rear axle didn’t do them a lot of favors without some chassis tuning, big block, four speed El Caminos were and still are sweet rides. Whether you like your Chevelles and El Caminos stock, restored, pro street style, pro touring, show queen, or slammed we’ve got at least one that will fit your tastes in this gallery. The statement about the rearend being light on an elco is incorrect.
The ones I saw run back in high school had significantly less traction than comparable Chevelle coupes and wagons. SS Elcos and GMC Sprints were burnout kings.
Maybe the obligatory Astro-Turf bed insert tames them down . . . .
