Roadtrippin: Exploring Our Favorite Closed Up Junkyard And Drooling Over A 1965 409 Impala SS

Roadtrippin: Exploring Our Favorite Closed Up Junkyard And Drooling Over A 1965 409 Impala SS

(Words and Photos by Scott Liggett) Whenever our buddy Liggett has a free moment he’s either working on his hot rods or exploring something cool and historical and car related. He has more adventures and fun laid back trips than anyone I know, and quite frankly I’m jealous. What I should be is inspired, so I’m going to start taking a cue from his playbook and do some exploring of my own in 2020. But until my adventures come to fruition, we’re going to share his with you so you too can be inspired. Here is one of his latest, from an old closed up junkyard that just so happens to allow Scott to stroll around checking everything out. You won’t find any clues as to exactly where this one is, and Scott won’t even tell us, because the owner doesn’t want the public bothering him. We don’t blame him.

My buddy and I like to roll up to a small town in Nowhere, NE to check out a closed down junkyard full of classic car gold. We do this a few times a year because even though the yard is closed to business, the owner still seems to rotate old cars in and out.
We were here back in August, but with all the rain this year, the weeds were nose high and we couldn’t really see anything but rooflines. A few weeks back, we had a nice warm Sunday, so we jumped in my newly acquired truck and roadtripped to see some hot rod gold. Thankfully, the November cold weather killed all those 6 foot weeds and we could see all cars and trucks this time.
Our friend, the owner of the property, got in some new stuff including some really cool COE’s, a 1935 International school bus, and a few muscle car era stuff we hadn’t seen before. Other cool rides included a 34 Ford 2 door sedan, a pair of 409 powered 65 Impalas, including one SS with four speed we want so, so bad!! A four speed 79 Trans Am, 59 El Camino, a 70 Monte Carlo with buckets and console, A Studebaker Champion with their unique speedometer. A very interesting 68 Malibu 2 door post coupe. It was optioned out with a 307 2 barrel, 3 speed stick on the floor with bucket seats, console, AC and disc brakes. Total option oddball.
A note here: The owner of the property allows us to take and share pictures, but asked us not to say where his property is at.

He obviously has his own clientele. I have bought stuff from him, but it took two years for him to get to know me before he would. That is just how he operates and I respect his wishes.
