Woodward Dream Cruise Weekend 2017: Beauties And The Beasts

Woodward Dream Cruise Weekend 2017: Beauties And The Beasts

A strange thing happens once I cross the Ohio River into Cincinatti: the rust epidemic goes from a cautionary tale to CDC-levels of bad in an instant. I shouldn’t be able to see through the bed of a Ford Super Duty from one side clear to the other. I’ve only had two cars that could have even competed with that Ford for red cancer: a 1973 Chevelle that had been left in the Washington rains for years, collecting pine needles underneath it’s vinyl roof, and my first car, a Camaro of similar vintage to the very Seventies “Light Lime” green example we caught rolling down the loop heading towards Detroit. Cars that should’ve returned to the earth anywhere else in the country were seen here in near-flawless condition. I haven’t seen a Camaro that vintage, that clean since 1988. I’ve never seen so many Vegas, Monzas and various other GM H-bodies running around looking days old without being a full-on race car. The true beauty of Woodward is spotting the cars that somehow got spared the daily driver grind. Look…between you, me and the wall, I’d engine swap that Camaro in half a second, like any other shovelnose Camaro. But I’d go all-out to leave it looking dead-stock and perfect. Now, as for the motorhome…how much torque can that transaxle take, again?
