This 1962 Galaxie May Be A Bit Of A Confusing Tribute But It Is One Awesome Car

This 1962 Galaxie May Be A Bit Of A Confusing Tribute But It Is One Awesome Car

I’m going to open up by saying that this is a very, very cool car. My bit of a quip there in the headline will be explained below but let’s go over what makes this hulking Ford so cool. In my opinion the cars of the early 1960s (especially pre-64) are not give the respect that they deserve. It was then that the burning coals of factory performance (largely though the vaunted “back door” of the factory) began to really superheat and it was those pre-64 cars that established the basis for the muscular and aggressive styling that you mark the design theme for the rest of the decade.

This 1962 Galaxie is a perfect example. I am a complete sucker for any car that is white and rolling on white steel wheels. I am a total sucker for any car with a big block that has multiple carbs. I am a total sucker for any old brawler that has a bench seat and a four speed jutting up through the floor. This car has all of those things and it is a very high quality build. The engine is a hotted up 390 with tri-power and the transmission is a virtually un-killable Ford Top Loader four speed. The rear end is a venerable Ford 9-inch with a gear that the owner says is around the 3.80 ratio and there are some neat period speed parts on it like the distributor. I dig the look of these Galaxies with their more formal squared off roofline and slightly concave nose. Neat cars in virtually any form but perfection here.

The only thing that’s weird to me is the fact that the original builder went with a Thunderbolt theme. I love the look and the feel of this car but Thunderbolts were build from Fairlanes not Galaxies. Now if taken as a “what if” type of car, we’ve got something else going on entirely. What if Ford decided to build a run of big heavy stockers before the R-code lightweights came out the next year? I can totally get into that story. I’m picking nits here but that’s what we do. Whatever you want to call this car I have a better thing I want to call it. MINE!

    Damn! I’ve had a trouser incident….

The only way to improve perfection in this case would be to remove the inner head lights and connect up the intake tubes for the air cleaner – I wonder why this wasn’t done as the builder’s got all the Thunderbolt influences spot on.

    Oh no, not again…….

The car is only off by one year, innit? Ford ran lightweight Galaxies before the T-Bolts came out, and they ran those teardrop scoops, as well.
What so odd here? It’s a ’62, not a ’63, so what? We had to run against those lightweight Galaxies in ’64 when we first got our new max wedge….

You ran against those 427 Lightweight Galaxies because Ford wasn’t sure that the NHRA would accept the Thunderbolt, so they keep them as a backup plan.

Bonner and Brannan ran the ’62’s for Ford back then. Bonner’s cars were usually white and Brannan’s usually red. They were of the G-code 406 tri-power variety but didn’t have the teardrop hood. I’ve seen some photos of the ’63’s with tear drops when they went to the 427’s.
My Father had a ’62 P-code 390/375hp that could be found on Route 1 in the Old Orchard Beach & Scarborough back in the day. He eventually pulled the 390 out of the ’62 and put it his partially restored ’57 Fairlane back in the early 80’s. Ended up selling everything for a sum that would make you cry today.

My friend Eugene had a 63 1/2 or 64 1/2 Galaxy 500 xl 2 door. It had a special roofline or something and he added a thunderbolt style hood. It was totally BA. The front license plate said “Fordgasim” He ruled New Bern High for a while with that one. As such this one is a great piece.

The 63 1/2 Galaxies had the new style fastback roofline. Back in the early 80’s I tried buying my neighbor’s R-code Galaxie. Offered him $3K for the car but would not sell to me, maybe being 18 had something to do with it! Sold the car for $2500 in 1981 and it was a running car.

I have this car in white and blue it’s got a 60 over 390 with a mercury 410 truck crank. RPM heads and cam dual quad carbs. I’m looking at a 6 speed conversion so I can run 3.73 4.11 gears and still participate in power tour and other cross country runs. Leaving mine with original patina vintage steel wheels with with white wall slicks. Mine is a bucket seat console car true 60’s survivor.
