2017 NHRA Auto Club World Finals – Photos From The Nitro Pits and The Calm Before The Storm

(Photos by Wes Allison) – The photos you are about to see down below here were taken on Friday morning at the 2017 NHRA World Finals. It was the calm before the storm. The team were doing their last car prep of the 2017 season. They had done it 24 race weekends and umpteen test weekend prior to coming back to Pomona for the second time of the season. They were tired, they were wrenching, and like all of us involved with the series, they were excited to see how this whole thing was going to play out.

You’ll see parts and pieces being prepared and cars that were basically field stripped getting put back together. Some teams used Pomona as a test session. One of those was the Make A Wish car tuned by John Collins and driven by Tommy Johnson Jr. That crew made the switch from the five disc to the six disc clutch on a test session after Las Vegas and liked what they saw. It was the right call as they ended up winning the race and closing the season on an emotional high.

All the teams are back to their respective shops already. The off season will be about fixing, cleaning, polishing, inventorying, rearranging, and perhaps rehiring in some cases. These crew guys are never done, it is just that their work will be completed behind a closed shop door for the next couple of months.
