(Photos be Benoit Pigeon) – It is the NHRA’s largest heads-up category. The E3 Spark Plugs pro mod series presented by J&A Services with a weekend race sponsor of Elite Motorsports brought something like 30 cars to Bristol Dragway and put on one hell of a show. The number of unqualified cars nearly matched the 16 car field and on top of it all, the racers did it in 90+ degree heat and fought track temperatures that crested 140-degress at points. The racing was crazy, there was wreckage, there were upsets, and there were all the things that any drag racing fan would expect from 3,000+ horsepower door slammers at one of the most stories tracks in the country.
While the blower guys seems to hate Bristol because it is an altitude track that chokes their engines, it was three blower cars and a nitrous entry that made the semi-finals and ultimately Khalid Al-Balooshi in the Bahrain 1 nitrous car took home his first victory in a while. The coolest part was that Khalid’s sons were on the property, over from his home country of Dubai.
This was one hell of a weekend. Hot, crazy, fast, and nasty. Just like the cars that were on the track.
