Yesterday we showed you a cool Aussie sleeper station wagon that looked like a grandmother left it in the church parking lot but went 10s. Today we’re back on our own shores and looking at an equally deceptive hot rod from the New Jersey that was strutting its stuff at the famed Raceway Park drag strip in Englishtown, New Jersey. This beat up, used up, tired looking 1980s Dodge Ramcharger is complete with off road tires, a push bar, some baja lights, scuffed up paint, and an eyebrow style spoiler above the windshield. In short, it looks like something I would have seen in my high school parking lot. Factory power was probably a 318 or a 360, both of which were laden down with smog junk, no compression, and cams that had lift and duration numbers so sad that we’re not even going to publish them.
The owner of this truck took the approach we admire. Leave the outside as gnarled and sad looking as possible but get the guts of the thing muscled up and ready for battle. If we had to guess, we’d surmise that there’s a 440 living under there and that 440 has some suds. It seems to make big low end power and we were as surprised as anyone to see the 13.08 elapsed time jump up on the board. While mph was not shown, it was surely up over 100. Sadly it is a much beloved b-body Chevrolet being shown the way home in this clip.
What’s even better? The announcer can be heard to say, “Let’s hope he has that throttle cable fixed…it has fallen off twice already,” about the Ramcharger. Talk about setting up your opponent! You lure him in with the sad sack looks and then throw in a couple of basic mechanical failures! That’s evil genius level thinking there!
