If there is one place on the NHRA Mello Yello drag racing series tour that Angie Smith may never be in a rush to get to, it could be Norwalk, Ohio and Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park. This is a place where she has had bikes try to throw her off, bikes catch on fire, and in this instance from several years back, bikes lose the brakes and send her hurtling into a cornfield.
One of the unique aspects of Norwalk is that there is literally nothing to hit beyond the finish line. Unlike Bristol that has a literal mountain that you run into, there’s openness after the finish line at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park. What that means is the track does not have the containment style catch fencing that the vast majority of the other tracks on tour have. Why? Because of the basically unlimited runoff. We have seen nitro cars and pro mods head off the end and be filled with dirt and grass but little worse for the wear because of it. A motorcycle is a different animal, though.
You’ll see how talented a rider Angie is here because she gears the bike down going through the shutdown area knowing that she has no brakes. She keeps the motorcycle on its wheels through the trap and into the grass before bailing off as the machine was heading into the corn. She literally walked away and was frustrated and disappointed but not harmed.
This is a crazy one.
