Another One Gone: Lyons Raceway Park In Indiana Is Closing

It seems that another track is shutting the gates and disappearing into history. Lyons Raceway Park, an 1/8th mile strip south of Indianapolis, Indiana that was built in the mid-1990s, will be ceasing operations on July 1, 2016 as part of the sale of the property that the dragstrip is on. Ohio Oil, Inc., the current property and facility owner, has put forward a plan to compensate anyone who had a financial stake in the track, which means that sponsors and pit space renters that pre-paid will be compensated for the time lost, and that Junior Dragster and GunSlinger points holders will be taken care of. What will happen to the track? Officially, there’s no real word. Unofficially, on the Lyons Raceway Park Facebook page, there is concern that the property was bought up to be converted to farmland. Considering that the track is in open area, that may not be too far from the truth, but that’s speculation at this point. What is known is that a popular 1/8th mile is closing and that the local racers are not happy with the decision one bit.

Lyons Raceway Park management agrees to initial terms to sell property

Lyons, Indiana June 29, 2016:  Lyons Raceway Park announced the facilities management has agreed to an offer to purchase the facility. As of July 1, 2016 the current property and facility owner, Ohio Oil Inc. will discontinue management and operation of the facility known as “Lyons Raceway Park”.  Ohio Oil Inc. spokesperson Steve Miller confirmed that a confidentiality agreement with the potential purchasing group has been signed and no further information is available at this time.

Ohio Oil Inc. CEO Brent Jones confirmed the potential sale and said, “The Jones family truly appreciates all of the competitors and spectators that have supported the racetrack over the last seven years. This is an extremely hard decision to make but it is in the best interest of our company to move on this opportunity. We have tried diligently to provide a quality facility for competitors and spectators to enjoy the sport of drag racing. As a family we appreciate the relationships that have grown through this experience.” Jones also detailed a plan to compensate parties that hold a financial stake in the operation of the facility for the 2016 season. This includes current sponsors, pit rental customers and GunSlinger points holders that currently carry a top ten position in points.

  • Lyons Raceway Park sponsors will be eligible to receive a 50% refund for the 2016 sponsorship funds that have been paid to the track for the remaining 2016 season.

  • Competitors that have rented a pit space and are current on entire rental payment for 2016 will receive a 50% refund on the remaining 2016 rental space.

  • JR Dragster Finals Teams have already been chosen and Lyons Raceway Park will stand by all agreements concerning the youth attending Bristol.

  • Competitors that have competed in the GunSlinger High Stakes Bracket. A points fund of $10,000.00 was created  for the top 11 positions after 3 races. Points will be paid out to the current 11 points positions and pro-rated at 1/3 of total points pay out, as one race has been completed. Official GunSlinger points are listed below. Ties will be broken by what winning points runs were completed first.  Checks will be mailed to addresses on file.

Raced there back in the 90s and early 2000s and it was the best. Laser straight all concrete, lots of shut down area and easy to get to. It was and is a very popular track. Too bad.
I guess Terre Haute Action Dragway and IRP will have a bunch of new racers.
Lets hope Terre Haute remains where it is on the fairgrounds.
