(Words and photos by Jacob Marshall) – It’s 2 am. I pop the tab on my third energy drink of the day, screw my next lens into my Nikon, and head for another night meet. As my feet shuffle across the still warm pavement the sounds of cams and turbochargers echo across all of Houston, singing their chorus of horsepower for all to hear. This is TX2K in the dark.
While Royal Purple Raceway puts on a phenomenal event during the day, much of the draw for the TX2K event stems from the size and caliper of the night time activities that can be found all across the city. Want to see a car hit the rollers of a chassis dyno at 3 am? TX2K has it. Need to smell E85 fumes at midnight? Houston is your place. The whole experience is actually surreal.
600 horsepower cars seem slow when surrounded by monsters making four digit horsepower and carrying a parachute above their license plate. Does street racing happen? Yes. Is it dangerous and reckless? Absolutely, and we don’t support it. But not every hot car that roams the Houston streets at night is seeking a challenger, this weekend is so much more. The vast majority are merely seeking camaraderie; friends to enjoy the fruits of their winter labor with, a squad to cruise with, an after-hours outlet of automotive expression and power. So scroll through the photos, and witness some of the finest truly street driven cars prowling Texas in the dark.
And if you find yourself at TX2K18 and see a lanky blonde dude in a Bangshift shirt who looks like he’s been up for three days straight, he has, grab him another coffee to keep him vertical!
