NHRA’s Mello Yello Drag Racing series visits a lot of great race tracks each year, but only a handful get a National Event twice per year. With that said, none are more important or prestigious than the season opener and final races of the season which are both held in NHRA’s backyard of Pomona California. The Fairplex in Pomona is home to the dragstrip that starts and ends it all each season and the place where I grew up going to the Big Show races after Fremont Dragstrip/Baylands Raceway shut down in 1988. If you are a drag race fan on the west coast, this is the place you just can’t miss. This season has been full of drama and excitement, and it’s all coming down to this final race to determine the season champions.
We’ve got photos coming all weekend, including big and small tire door cars, Dragsters, Funny Cars, and so much more. This is our first gallery from Thursdays wheels up Sportsman action, and we’ll have plenty more coming throughout the weekend. Tell us what you like best and we’ll make sure we get even more of it. My favorites are Stock, Super Stock, Competition Eliminator and Pro Stock, but who doesn’t love side by side Nitro action like only big show Funny Cars and Top Fuelers can provide?

VERY historic, important and significant but . . . championships not withstanding . . . not as much so as the Nationals. Sorry Chad, you notched the hyperbole up one too far on this. The U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park are THE most important, historic and significant drag race in the world. Period.
That said, thanks for the great pictures and for all you guys do every day. BangShift rules!
