Firebird aka Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park Has Multi-Million Dollar, 120 Day Renovation Plan

Firebird aka Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park Has Multi-Million Dollar, 120 Day Renovation Plan

We’ve been following the closing and opening and management changes at Firebird Raceway since the beginning of the drama at the famed Arizona facility. And throughout the adventure we have said that it was going to stay open or reopen, which it has, and that the Gila River Indian Community would undoubtedly make the place look like a million bucks and then plant a casino on it right in the middle of all the racetracks. So far we are least partially right. According to an interview with the Ahwatukee Foothill News, that Ronnie Mankins tippoed us off to, there are some big changes in store for Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park (WHPMP) and we will see a lot of them at their first event in September when the Lucas Oil Drag Boats come to town.

New track President Dick Hahne, formerly with Daytona International Motor Speedway, says that they will spend several million dollars on this facility  and plan to have everything completed within 120 days of August 1st. We like the sound of that. Improvements will include a ton of cleanup and dress up, but don’t for a second think they aren’t going to make performance improvements as well.

Hahnes’ plans include a full resurface of the drag strip, state of the art timing and scoring improvements throughout the facility, more grandstands, a redo of all suites and the control tower, updated restrooms, new hospitality areas, and lots of new carpet and landscaping. Their efforts will change the look of the track dramatically, and will include the middle of the lake, and the east road course as they are seen from the highway. All signs and entrances will be updated to reflect WHPMP’s status as a world class racing facility.

There is a lot more to this story, including details on the drama that surrounding the closing and reopening of the track, and I’ll talk about that tonight on PowerShift LIVE right here at BangShift.com, so tune in at 6pm Pacific to watch, learn, and laugh.
