Arizona Auto Scene is reporting that the Gila River Indian Community has abruptly cancelled the contract of Copper Train Management, the group that was overseeing the operation of the facility and the group that had spearheaded the renovations to the venerable Arizona track. According to the story, the Gila River group cancelled the contract due to their displeasure with the performance of Copper Train Management. The good news is that the group immediately approached and appointed Rod Wolter to assume the position of General Manager and continue the seamless operation of the facility. Wolter apparently made a statement relaying that the intentions of the Gila River Indian Community is to keep the track open for the long run.
We have to imagine that the Copper Train Management group has to be unhappy with this decision as it was them who came in after a lease could not be reached with previous operator Charlie Allen and after signing the agreement. They had the first 550′ of both lanes of the track resurfaced, they designed and had brand new scoreboards installed, installed a new track PA system, spruced up the tower and suites, and then oversaw the operation of the big NHRA race at the beginning of this season. Apparently they were called into a meeting yesterday and notified that their contract was void.
We’re working on making contact with the Copper Train Management team to get a statement and perhaps some more information on what led up to this decision. Racers may not notice anything different as the track will not cancel or alter any events on their schedule due to this change and all regular programs remain intact. Stay tuned, this could get interesting.
