(Words and Photos by Darr Hawthorne) After a Sunday morning rain delay of about five hours, the track crew at Auto Club Famoso Raceway worked their asses off to complete the 59th Good Vibrations March Meet.
Ultimately the weatherman prevailed as a brief, cold hale-filled cloud dropped a mess as the sun set.
There are still Final Rounds and class eliminations to finish here at the Patch, on what is looking like a cloudless morning in Bakersfield, California. The Top Fuel final round features a battle between Jim Murphy’s WW2 dragster (above) and Mendy Fry, driving the High Speed Motorsports digger.
Mendy (above) defeated low qualifier Tony Bartone in Round One as T-bone’s dragster moved into Fry’s lane as she motored on to an awesome 5.597, low ET of eliminations. Murphy’s Roland Leong tuned dragster defeated Rick McGee and then ran a 5.635 to beat Bret Williamson in the Semis.
Nitro Funny Car is a battle of two of the quickest and fastest of the Victory Camaro’s, pitting defending 2016 Heritage Series champion Kris Krabill in the Austin & O’Brien “Northwest Hitter” (above) and Canadian Ryan Hodgson’s “Pacemaker” nitro funny car.
The cars are very evenly matched with Hodgson (above) running a best of 5.678 in the second round when he narrowly beat Dan Horan Jr and Krabill best run of eliminations was a 5.613 in the first round against Chris Davis. Both Krabill and Hodgson are members of the Legends of Nitro 260 MPH Club for Nitro Funny Cars.
In the AA/Fuel Altered final it’ll be Bryan Hall’s “The Tramp” ’32 Bantam (above) is facing James Generaldo Jr. in his “Impatient” ’23 Ford T, running on the class mandated 6.0 Index.
The weather looks great today as Final Eliminations for all classes; Gassers, Nostalgia Eliminator, A/Fuel, 7.0 Pro and all the fuel cars is scheduled to resume at 10:00 AM and BangShift.com is here, LIVE!
