It blows me away every time I find out about some amazing tool that has been missing from my life, and sometimes I feel like a weirdo for not knowing that a tool even existed. And sometimes I have a tool that I’ve known about and used forever that I find out others have never used or even heard of. I guess it just goes to show you that even when tools are more accessible than ever, not everyone see or uses the same stuff. And then there are tools like this one that I’ve been using for years and years, and at the same time can understand why everyone might not. This is a thread chaser set, and if you don’t have one then you should. Trust me.
I bought my first thread chaser kit from Russ “The Tool Guy” at the Long Beach Swap Meet nearly 20 years ago. But I had used a few growing up because my dad had one or two thread chasers floating around in the toolbox.
Right now there are probably a few of you yelling at your screen about owning a tap and die set like an adult, which means you don’t need a thread chaser kit. You would be wrong. Seriously, they are NOT the same thing.
A thread chaser can’t thread a hole. That’s not what it is there for. A tap or die can, technically, “chase” threads but because its job is to cut threads it can easily ruin already existing and dinged up threads and take your threaded hole or bolt to a place that is going to require an insert or part replacement. A thread chaser on the other hand is there for no reason but to smooth and clean threaded holes and fasteners, and they do it well. If you don’t have a set for chasing all the holes in a new engine build you are missing out. But if you are building a hot rod, muscle car, etc, then you’ll find a lot of holes that will benefit from being chased before you starting bolting things together. And if you are trying to keep, clean, and repair threaded fasteners in a restoration, these are a requirement.
Watch the video below from Project Farm where a variety of thread chasers are tested and reviewed for you!
Video Description:
I wish I had this tool 10 years ago!
So much better than a Tap & Die set for many applications. Brands: Lang, Irwin Tap & Die, VEVOR, Gray Tools, CTA Tools, MAHOOMMAKH, YESHMA, AKM, and Orion. Thread chaser kits were compared for performance repairing damaged threads on Grade 5 and Grade 8 bolts. Additionally, the thread chasers were compared for performance and durability on rusty fasteners and bolts with JB Welded threads. Definitely, the most underrated tool ever made!
I purchased all of the thread shaser kits to ensure an unbiased review. So, thank you for supporting the channel.
