Breaking News: NHRA Announces Holley EFI Chosen As Sole Provider of EFI For Pro Stock In 2016

Breaking News: NHRA Announces Holley EFI Chosen As Sole Provider of EFI For Pro Stock In 2016

Well the one question left to answer in the NHRA Pro Stock conversion to electronic fuel injection has been answered. Holley has been chosen by the NHRA as the sole provider of efi components to the pro stock teams. It was unclear to this point whether the NHRA would go with a spec efi system as NASCAR did or whether they would allow teams to shop their own options. We’re guessing to ease potential tech department headaches and Maalox moments they went with a sole provider and Holley is it.

Holley has really made a strong run in the efi game over the last several years, diving into the hot rodding efi revolution headlong and releasing products like the Terminator which is their self tuning ECU all the way up to their full-tilt Dominator that has become very popular in a multitude of fuel injection applications on and off the street. We do not have the specifics on what components and parts the teams will be using but we will soon and when we do, we’ll clue you in on exactly what they will be working with and how the lives of pro stock racers and tuners from this point forward.

Scrap the carb budget…which we have been told flat out be one team was $35,000 last year. Holley currently supplies the throttle bodies to NASCAR teams and their fuel injection is the spec unit in the ARCA series among others.

Stay tuned, there is a lot more to this story and we’re going to bring it to you.

Here’s the official announcement from the National Hot Rod Association –

NHRA announced Aug. 13 the rules and requirements for the 2016 Pro Stock category in their transition to electronic fuel injection (EFI).

The sanctioning body has named Holley as the sole provider of the components of the electronic fuel injection system.

The complete rules and requirements are available from NHRARacer.com for download.

The changes in the category will make the engines more relevant from a technology standpoint. In order to reduce and control costs for the race teams, an NHRA-controlled 10,500 Rev Limiter will be added to the fuel injection systems.

The change to EFI in the factory hot-rod category is among several changes to the category. NHRA required teams to back their racecars into the pits and leave engines uncovered beginning at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals. A rule was also created to discontinue the practice of crew members standing beside the cars to hold them in place as they begin their burnouts. It was also mandated for teams to create automobile manufacturer identification headers visible on the racecars’ windshields up to a maximum of 4.5-inches high, but not smaller than 2.125-inches.

Beginning in 2016, NHRA also will require Pro Stock teams to remove all hood scoops and reduce the length of the wheelie bars to a length specified by the NHRA Tech Department.

Why screw the other injection companies? And why not allow some teams to run carbs? Could make pro stock actually interesting if they had carb vs EFI, and maybe even throw in a little mechanical injection. It\’d be like the pro mod battles. Better yet, make PM the televised class, and drop PS like they did the pro stock trucks.

Who will be the sole provider of the sealed, 500 CID engines for 2017? All joking aside, this seems to be the way it’s going. Yawn. Wake me up when NHRA is interesting and relevant again.

They didn’t go far enough. They should go back to looking exactly like the showroom car. I would prefer to see a forward rack again which hopefully would return to launches with wheels in the air again. Also return to weight to cubic inch rules which would bring the LS engines in to play for GM and the mini hemi for Chry and who know maybe Ford might again show some interest. They should have also long ago put some restrictions on the HP of FC and TF. Also return FC bodies to something that looks like the car they are trying to represent. Oh yea, return to 1320 feet.

One of the new specs for Pro Stock for 2016 is shorter wheelie bars. This should create front wheels in the air take offs.

Sounds like all NHRA wants to do is take all the Cobra Jets, Drag Packs and COPO’s out of Super Stock and reinvent them as Pro Stock. Let’s face it, those cars are closer to what Pro Stock was before it got out of hand. If they do that maybe more guys will step up, and maybe it will get interesting again, but I doubt it.

They should show pro mods instead.
We want blowers and nitrous on cool cars.
