I know it seems like we’re going overload on the NHRA Denver stuff but the race was freaking awesome and it had so many elements to it that we can hardly get them all wedged into today’s content onslaught. For starters, Shane Gray became the first pro stock driver to run 200 mph “on the hill” and he was not the only one. The record book at Bandimere was smashed to pieces by the time we were done on Friday night and then Saturday came with the pro stock rules announcement, and then Sunday came and delivered one of the classic pro stock final rounds of the last 10 years. In one lane was Alan Johnson in a car that looked completely unstoppable over the course of the weekend and with his history of piling up wins at the track, it was all but a foregone conclusion that he was about to grab another. Enter the resurgent Larry Morgan who has gone 25 years without winning more than one event in a season. His FireAde Camaro was running strong but he wasn’t a match for Johnson, right? Wrong.
Using guile and the experience of a guy who has raced every pro stock event that the NHRA has put on since 1987 except for ONE singular event, Morgan went to the starting line with a plan and that plan was to stage second, no matter how long it took. The only problem is that Johnson entered with the same plan. The two men pre-staged and sat there. They sat there for 30 seconds, a minute, a minute 10, a minute 20, a minute 30, and finally Johnson went in, Morgan hung for another couple of seconds and finally turned on his bottom bulb. The two rocketed off the track and down into history.
