Burnouts, Baby! Tire Frying, Smoke Making, Fun At Thornhill Dragway

Burnouts, Baby! Tire Frying, Smoke Making, Fun At Thornhill Dragway

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – Burnouts.  We all enjoy either watching them or doing them.  This gallery is made up of photos from the tradition that ranges from just cleaning the tires off to heating the hides enough to they can stick to Teflon.  The Dodge Ram was a treat to see perform the task as it seemed completely effortless.  That thing makes so much torque you could have ran it on tar paper and the tires would still make noise going down track.  We managed to capture Joe Bridges and John Howard simultaneously performing their procedure in near twin-appearing, yellow Ford Falcon gassers.  As I standing by the starting line I saw the blue Nova with the hood scoop approaching the burnout box and spotted stickers on the slicks.  I rushed back to capture what would likely be a monumental smokey to break the tires in properly.  I wasn’t disappointed.  Finally, my son managed to snap the shot of the red Chevy II initiating the heating process, and in my opinion, captured it perfectly.  Great way to spend a Saturday night.

Enjoy.
