Charlie Cooper’s Turbocharged Cobra Jet Is A Real Rocket – See It Run Here

(Video Credit: VictoryRedColorado YouTube channel) – Those of you that are really up on your drag racing geekery will know that the quickest “legal” Mustang Cobra Jet in the NHRA super stock ranks has run deep into the 7.80 zone. On the stock eliminator side the quickest cars there have run into the 8.30s. You’ll also remember that at SEMA a couple of years ago a twin turbocharged Cobra Jet was teased to the general public but for a variety of reasons nothing ever came of it from that point on.

Enter NMCA and NMRA racer Charlie Cooper. He has a 2012 Cobra Jet that he’s ripped the blower off of and replaced it with a turbo. He runs as quick and as fast as the full kill, multi-year engineered, Roush assisted, bad daddy super stock car with his machine and that’s not to say that he’s doing it the easy way or anything but it does show the incredible potential that these cars have. To boot, Cooper is limited by class rules to a single turbo and while we have not seen anyone go completely off the deep end with a car such as this one yet, it is only a matter time until someone will lots of money decides to have the “ultimate” Cobra Jet with a big pair of twins on it to see just how far one car take a Coyote engine into the 7s.

You’ll see on the first run that Cooper did not want to show his hand. The car was literally flying down the track and at about 1,000ft he was off the gas and hard onto the binders to get the whole thing slowed down. Once he was lined up to Brian Devilbiss though the thought of the brake pedal never entered his mind.

Turbo Cobra Jet…an idea that needs to be explored until their are connecting rods on the ground (just not ours)!
