Choo-Choo: The Night Train Olds 442 Is Rolling, Ready For This Year’s Challenges!

Every GM G-body got a performance spec variation. Some were better than others, though. Without question, the Buick Grand National and GNX were the pinnacle of what the company could make the G-body do. The Monte Carlo SS was a solid performer and the Grand Prix 2+2…well, it did get the body shell homologated for NASCAR, but that’s about all the nice things you can say about it. The regular GP was too fluffy and too underpowered to be taken seriously without work. But what about Oldsmobile? Like Pontiac and Buick, Oldsmobile always had a bit of a bi-polar take on what their cars would be. Some were fluffy and catered to those who wanted to be coddled and others were designed to harken back to the wild days of the Sixties and early Seventies. Care to guess where the 442 options package fell?

This 442 is known as Night Train and it’s based out of North Carolina. Like a lot of cars down in the Southeast, it’s got a reputation to go along with the name, and those two things are normally all you need to hear. But hear this…behind that very obvious turbocharger is NOT an LS. That is pure small-block Chevrolet being force-fed all the air it can handle. This Olds does exactly what it is supposed to do: pop off at the launch and scream down the quarter mile with no drama!
