(Words and photos by Doug Gregory)This gallery has a bunch of racers without doors and is dominated by rear-engine dragsters – more specifically Top Dragsters. This class of rail is really exploding because folks can go super-quick with what seems like a fairly generic setup, but not the expense of a TAD or fueler. These things are a serious kick because at the performance levels being reached they are dealing with extremes typically reserved for the pro ranks. Two standouts here are the wildly-painted and plated Instant Karma cars.
This pair run juiced big-block Chryslers, which is not your normal fair for any RED unless it’s a Hemi. To say these raced rides are stunning is an understatement. I heard a few folks comment that these aren’t raced when I know in fact they are. If you think show-winning status is only for non-functional rides then you either never knew of or remember stuff like bob Hood’s ’68 Nova or Brent Jarvis’ purple Corvette. ISCA show winners. Another thing I noted is that when I first started going to the drags every dragster was a hard-tail. Nowadays it seems all but the FEDs are soft-tails. Also in this gallery are a few of the roundy-round types that are cool to go watch when time allows.
