When John Force Racing made the switch from Ford to Chevrolet there was lots of excitement and one overriding questions. The question was pretty simple. “What are they going to use as a funny car body?” Everyone was asking and everyone was making their own guesses. As it turned out, the NHRA allowed the team to use the already approved Mustang body with a decal package to simulate a Camaro look. While some fans freaked out about this, there was some logic in the decision. That body was already approved, it would keep the teams on the track, and it wold not be forever because Chevrolet was setting the stage for today, the introduction of the new Chevy Camaro nitro funny car body.
John Force Racing has done a really good job about keeping this thing under tight wraps and preventing any leaks to the media. We were privy to a couple of photos of a bare shell and threatened with death if we shared them but we think that the body looks interesting. There are some actual factory design elements incorporated into the body and the people at GM spent lots of time and money developing the whole thing as an aerodynamic package.
To us, it is still an amazing thing that an OEM would commit the resources necessary to make this body a reality. We love the fact that they do it but there cannot be a lot of overlap between the development of a funny car body and the business of making cars on a day to day basis. This is going to be interesting for sure. Watch!
