Corvair Blog War! Mactaggart’s Clean And Stock ‘Vair Was Cool But This Gasser Freak Rules!

Corvair Blog War! Mactaggart’s Clean And Stock ‘Vair Was Cool But This Gasser Freak Rules!

The other day, McTaggart posted a pretty clean little Corvair as part of a Rough Start item he wrote and while the car was nice and cheap it was pretty much stock. Stock Corvairs are nice but they don’t spin our crank as hard as the modified ones and this one that Matt Cramer pointed us towards is about as nutty as they get. No, it will not be all that fast but it rules hard in the cool points category. Why? Suicide spring, straight axle, inline six, engine in front. That’s the Cliff’s Notes.

We have seen plenty of front motor Corvair conversions over the years but we have never seen one done with a 292i Chevy inline six truck engine hooked to what we believe is a T-5 transmission, and held up in the air with a single transverse leaf spring at the front of the vehicle. The car has a cage in it and a couple of bucket seats and that is all. We’re kind of loving it. Are you? No, it will not win a lot of drag races but it surely will be one of the most swarmed cars every time you go to a cruise night or beat on it during a grudge night at the strip.

The seller is in the mood to trade the car for something like a Harley or a truck. That being said you can make a cash offer and if it “hits him right” he will sell you the car. We’re not sure how hard and to what location on his body you are supposed to chuck the cash but you may have a better idea on that.

I think this is the first salvo, the first actual return fire on a Corvair blog war and like the others before this one with dually trucks and station wagons, Bryan is in a whole heap of trouble. My favorite thing about starting a blog war is not telling the other guy until the shells are exploding around him. Buckle up kid!

Cool but NOT a 292 – it started life as a 250. Note the height of the side covers – the 292s are about 2″ TALLER. I say “started life” as, of course, displacements can and do change. I have 3 of ’em in the shop.

Still a great little car though I’d prefer a SB of some sort midships.

To whomever that buys this car please take care of it. My daddy and I built this car from top to bottom after school and work when I was growing up and if I had the money I’d love to have it back. Was definitely a great project for us.
