Could Be Fun: This 1972 Pontiac Wagon Has The Fun Bits Ready…How Would You Finish It?

Could Be Fun: This 1972 Pontiac Wagon Has The Fun Bits Ready…How Would You Finish It?

Creating a phantom musclecar out of an otherwise ho-hum station wagon variant of the same model is always a popular idea. Satellites into Road Runner wagons, a Vista Cruiser turned 442 W-30, even the 5.0 Mustang/Fairmont crossover…we’ve seen plenty when it comes to the basics of making the conversion work. Find a good wagon, apply the right touches, and make sure it’s got the grunt to back up the looks. Done and done. Which puts us in a minor predicament with this 1972 Pontiac wagon. It’s got the GTO nose and hood, which is a score, and there’s the blown Pontiac 400, which is a bigger score. But that color…we don’t know.

1972 is where you see Pontiac turn bi-polar…on one hand you have the performance freaks that weren’t convinced that the party was over. On the other, you had buttoned-down exec-types who were tired of the foolishness and wanted Pontiac to return to a stuffy, upscale adulthood. The Judge had been killed off in February of 1971, and the GTO would start to wobble a bit for 1973 with the one-year only Colonnade body car before making the leap to the smaller X-car Ventura. 1972 is the last year of the classic-shape A-body, and one of the more aggressive faces for the GTO…sorry, but I believe that the 1972 nose cone has more intimidation factor than any other GTO made. Two deep inlets plus the twin-nostril hood scoops just flat work for me.

So what do you do to finish this car off right? More tire out back is certainly needed, as are the final details for the front end. The car has undergone a restoration of sorts, and the work looks good so far. But we’d seriously consider looking at the 1971 Judge’s stripe layout for this car…or maybe not? How would you finish it up?

I like everything but the altitude. I’d drop it about 3 inches. My ride is a phantom 2dr 70 SS wagon by the way.
