(Photos by Tommy Lee Byrd) – For more than half a century, Paradise Drag Strip in Calhoun, Georgia has been sending cars, two by two, down the asphalt aisle from the Spring through the Fall and this year was no exception. To celebrate the good weather and great racers, the track threw its annual fall Show-N-Go which combines the best elements of cool cars at a show and shine with the stuff we really love which is tire smoking drag strip action. The variety of iron was perfect with everything from blown, tube-chassis Mustang IIs to twin turbocharged hot rods like the Chevy coupe shown below which have the classic styling of the early hot rod era and the big power today’s world. Nothing is better than that.

The sport of drag racing has evolved in massive ways since 1961 but the great thing is that facilities like Paradise are still open to host such as these. If you live in an area where there’s more than one local track, please spread the love. We need to keep places like Paradise up and running for as long as possible because they are the heart and soul of drag racing. For every big time track that hosts one event a month or maybe even less than that, there are 10 Paradise drag strips supporting the grass roots end of the hobby as best they can.
