Drag Action Gallery: Sportsman Racing From Mount Park Dragway!

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – While we were down at Mt. Park Dragway taking in the Southeast Gassers brackets were also running.  Capturing vehicles burning fuel is way more fun that just walking around so I spent the majority of the weekend crouched next to a guardrail or wall trying to catch the action.  We’ve been going to Clay City (where this track is located) for many years and always enjoy the show.  Many of the same cars we watched back then are still regulars here.  This is not a gallery of them.  Nearly everything in this group is new-to-us.  The only thing we can recall seeing repeatedly over the years is the Buick Skylark.  It’s been hiking the front end with authority for as long as I can remember.  To keep it brief we’ll just mention a few of our favorites in this collection:

The square-body Cheyenne was super-clean and a hard runner.  We dig the color combination.

White ’67 Camaro came late and got one time shot so he performed a rather significant burnout for that pass and followed that up by going rounds.  Win.

The red Nova with the tall scoop and no flames….I was out of position when its burnout started so I spun around and caught this one image.  That is an un-cropped and unaltered photo (well, it’s been resized).  Remember, you typically can’t catch these shots if you aren’t prepared.  I wasn’t, but got lucky.

Enjoy.
