Last weekend Ware Shoals Dragway in South Carolina was the scene of a horrible crash that took the life of racer Craig Owen and wounded at least one spectator. Owen was traveling down the track at a high rate of speed when his car suddenly veered right and sent him into the wall. After striking the wall his car went into a series of very violent snap rolls and flips which resulted it in the car vaulting over the guard wall, heading up an embankment and seriously injuring at least one spectator. That spectator has this three year old son with him and the man threw his son to relative safety at the last second. The son was also injured in the calamity but it sounds as though the scene would have been far worse if not for his fast acting dad.
This is a very sad story and something that we hate to report to you but the reality is that it’s a sobering reminder that no matter how long you have been doing it and how many races you have seen, there’s a chance that you could find yourself at odds with a powerful, fast moving race car .
There has been no announcement made about the root cause of the crash. We’re going to be following this story in the coming days and weeks to see how the spectators turn out and whether any good can come out of this total tragedy.
prayers going out for all, always……
