There’s more fantastic news for drag racing fans of another track getting huge and much needed improvements this season. It has been a year of nearly unprecedented work and upgrades at tracks across the country. When you combine this with the fact that there are a bunch of tracks reopening and coming back to life in the 2016 year it is honestly one of the most amazing years we can remember regarding the health of the facilities hosting the sport. The latest feel good story? Lancaster Dragway that is located outside of Buffalo, New York. This is a place that has been opened since 1959 and has served forever as the local drag racing hot spot. The strip shared duties as one of the straights on the oval track and the crew has been patching the place together for races for years but it is now being completely replaced with concrete. Yes, an all-concrete eighth-mile will make Lancaster a player once again.
We were there for a race last fall that saw pro mods and really fast small tire cars trying to get down and despite the hard work of a dedicated track crew, it just wasn’t there. Before the race we visited a bunch of local shops and businesses that were run by guys who used to race there and they all told us that when the facility was hooking and booking they loved racing there. As things fell off some over the years they all found other places or stepped away from the sport. This new surface will likely bring some of them back out because it is going to be a ripper for sure.
The track has a bunch of big events planned for 2016 including some appearances by America’s favorite TV street racers and pro mods galore. Remember, this is an area that has produced some of the great drag racing talent of the last half century. The Jim Oddys of the world, the Freddie Hahns, guys like Fletcher, killers like Billy Leber and others have all turned wheels at Lancaster. The place may be old but it is getting a new face of the best kind. This is going to be a fun deal to watch play out in 2016!
